Cornatzer - Dulin Volunteer Fire Department was founded by members of the Cornatzer & Dulin communities realizing the need for a community fire department. On November 18, 1955, a general meeting was called for all interested citizens in the area. Attorney Peter W Hairston spoke to the group at this meeting, and outlined the requirements for a charter and organization of a volunteer fire department. Plans were made to organize the department at this meeting, and a tentative goal of $7000.00 was set to raise.
On December 9, 1955, 11 community members went to Raleigh and had a charter created. The men and women of the communities moved quickly, raising funds and purchasing equipment later the same year. The money was raised through private donations, benefit suppers, and programs. On December 18, 1955, the first benefit supper was held. Thereafter, under the direction of newly organized women's auxiliary, other benefits were held.
One year after the first of these suppers were held, December 18, 1955, the department received their new truck. The truck was a brand new two-ton Chevrolet truck which was equipped with a 750 gallon tank and two one-inch hose reels. The department also purchased a piece of land, which is where it is located today. An alarm system was installed, which included when you dialed the phone number to the station it would ring the phone numbers of the firemen.
Today the department has 3 Engines (Pumper/Tankers), 1 Brush Truck, 1 Equipment Truck, 1 Squad Truck, and 1 Utility Truck. We also house 1 of Davie County Fire & Rescue Association's traffic control trailers. In an attempt to provide adequate coverage in the district during day time hours while most volunteers are at work, we have also have a member that works part time Monday through Thursday 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, and Friday 8:30 am to 12:00 pm. We have also worked very hard to obtain a 5/9s ISO rating for our district.
